Quick Start
From installing to everyday use and managing your data — everything in order.
Getting started
Is it free? Do I need to sign in?
Every feature is free. Notes, the Planner, reminders, shortcuts and backups all work right away without signing in — you only need an account to turn on sync between devices.
Can I use it on my phone?
Right now Tyranote is a desktop app for macOS and Windows. We're working on a mobile app so you can pick up where you left off on your phone — stay tuned. For now, visit tyranote.com on your PC to download it.
Windows shows a warning when I install it.
Tyranote is new and hasn't been downloaded many times yet, so Windows flags it as an app it doesn't recognize. When you see 'Windows protected your PC', click More info → Run anyway. The warning fades as more people install it, and we plan to add Windows code signing.
Everyday use
What shortcuts are there?
New note — ⌘/Ctrl + Enter (from any app) Open/close the Planner — ⌘/Ctrl + ` Open a pinned note — ⌃/Ctrl + Q·W·E Pin a note to Q·W·E — in the note window, ⌃/Ctrl + ⌥/Alt + Q·W·E Close the window — ESC Shortcuts can't be changed yet.
How do I set a due date on a note?
Click the flag in the note window to pick a date, then click or drag on the timeline to set a time (in 15-minute steps). If you don't pick a time, it's 'all day'. Other plans for the same day show on the timeline too, so you can spot overlaps right away. Notes with a due date appear in the calendar and rise to the top of the list as the deadline gets closer.
When do reminders arrive?
Each morning you get a briefing of today's deadlines and what's coming up, and for due dates with a set time we remind you 1 hour and 10 minutes before. At night, an evening recap looks back on what you finished today. You can turn them all off with one switch: 'Due date reminders' in Settings.
Can I change the app language?
Click 'Language' at the top of Settings to choose from 9 languages. On Windows, the app first opens in the language you picked during installation.
Managing your data
How does sync work?
Sign in with your email under Settings → Cloud sync to turn it on. Notes sync when you open the app, after you edit a note, and automatically every 10 minutes. If the same note is edited on two devices at once, both versions are kept. Sync is free, too.
How do I back up my notes?
Go to Settings → Data → Backup → Export to save a backup file (.tyranote) locked with a password you choose. It's encrypted with AES-256 and works without signing in. When you import it, missing notes are restored, and if the same note has different content, both versions are kept. Folders aren't included in backups.
Can I recover a note I deleted by mistake?
Deleted notes stay in the Trash for 30 days. You can restore them from Settings → Restore notes → Open Trash. After 30 days they're permanently deleted.
Where are my notes stored? Are they safe?
Notes are encrypted with AES-256 and stored on your device, and the encryption key is kept separately in your OS keychain. If you turn on sync, notes stay encrypted both in transit and on the server. Usage stats to improve the service are sent only if you agree, and never include your notes, email or IP. You can turn them off in Settings at any time.
